A One of a Kind Compilation of Slovenia folk art

No Honey No Money is provocative homage to the ancient art and science of apiculture, featuring over 50 digitalized scanned art works, compiled alongside a modern narrative set in a ultra-contemporary context.

The Book

A curated selection of these scans were sequenced alongside a unique narration to create a limited edition box set entitled No Honey No Money : a modern tale of the beekeeper, his queen, and their bees. Referencing traditional Slovene folklore and contemporary pop culture, No Honey No Money is a bilingual graphic scan-book for children and art enthusiasts alike. 

This three part box-set, includes;
  • An informative booklet featuring archival imagery, drawings and writings discussing views and ideas on the origins of beehive art.
  • A hard cover full colorized 74 page story-book featuring over 50 original bee panel high resolution scans.
  • And a one of a kind, never-seen before poster.

Making of

Initially working with photography, Badawi set out to catalogue this unique art form in the summer of 2017. 

Eventually swapping his camera to work with high performance flatbed scanners, t
hrough interviews with local beekeepers, collectors and a partnership with the National Slovene Ethnographic Museum in Ljubjuana (SEM), creating the first ever digitized repertoire of ancient Slovenian apiary art.

No Honey No Money, which features selection of this of ancient Slovenian apiary art includes not only paintings, but found-objects, embroidery, and even a scanned honeycomb.

The Author

Visual anthropologist, Kim Badawi, traveled all over Slovenia creating over 4,000 high resolution images  to produce this modern story scan-book.

Book launch & Exhibition:

The official launch of No Money No Honey will take place at the Slovene Ethnographic Museum on September 26,2018 as part of a temporary exhibition, “Where the Bees are at Home”, and will remain on view until June 16th, 2019. 

​The author and artist, of ancestry is partially Slovene
( see Aleksandrinke ) will be also offering twelve of his own custom-made wooden bee panels as part of donated to the museum's permanent collection. These unique works can be seen here.
